Wine and Tears - Epilogue

Updated: Jun 10, 2019

'Wine and Tears' is a combination of four short stories...well, of four people. They are connected by one single object, a souvenir, a champagne cork, seemingly unimportant.

Mark and Elise are accomplished adults in their forties, old friends since their failed relationship. In contrast, Mitch and Emilie are both the definition of human failure. Elise and Mark could have easily become Emily and Mitch. What made the difference? I leave it to your imagination.

But here is my version:

Life is filled with seemingly useless or « wrong » relationships that we remember with regret. Be it love or friendship. The truth is: the only « wrong relationships » are those we fail to learn from.

It is our own and utter responsibility to recognize every opportunity to grow and change our destructive or toxic behavior. Yes, not of others’, but our very own.

When someone makes us suffer, we are basically torturing ourselves, by failing to recognize what is right or wrong FOR us. And refusing to face what is right and wrong IN us.

Relationships are calipers by which we could measure and slowly calculate who we are, what we want, in order to build well founded personalities, self-consciousness and self-respect.

Some people come into our life to transform us in a way nobody ever did, in a moment when we need it the most. They will push us lower than we ever imagined possible and elevate us to touch the stars. By doing so, they remind us that there is something wrong with our calculations, we were measuring the world with the wrong stick for so long.

Mark and Elise are the examples.

The problem is that lots of people use themselves as the universal golden measuring stick, one that is never calibrated, never questioned. Because of pride, cowardice or simply laziness.

By refusing to recognize « failed relationships » as opportunities to choose a better system to measure themselves and the world, they end up constructing unstable foundations for an unstable life.

Mitch and Emily did exactly that.
